Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and warm greetings.
The academic world is evolving very quickly. Knowledge can no longer be produced and then left only in theses, research reports, laboratories, or lecture rooms. Knowledge must be turned into quality writing, published through trusted platforms, discovered by the academic community, and ultimately used for the benefit of society and the world.
Based on this principle, Universiti Putra Malaysia Press continues to strengthen its role not only as a university publisher, but also as a strategic partner in developing knowledge and developing writers.
I would like to share a special message with postgraduate students, Master’s and PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and young lecturers.
You already have something very valuable.
You have research.
You have data.
You have findings.
You have experience from the field and the laboratory.
And most importantly, you have knowledge that may not yet have been explored or shared with the world.
The question is: should all that hard work end only as a thesis kept in a library, or as a report read by only a few people?
I believe the answer must be no.
DO NOT LET KNOWLEDGE END WITH THE THESIS
A thesis is the result of a long academic journey. It contains research questions, analysis, discoveries, experiences, and the thinking of a researcher, developed through the application of scientific methods.
However, a thesis should not be the end of the journey of knowledge.
It should be the beginning of wider publication.
Part of that research can be developed and transformed into journal articles, monographs, research books or chapters in high-quality academic books.
This is where UPM Press wants to play a bigger role.
We want to become a bridge between research and publication.
We want to help young researchers understand how an idea, a research finding or part of a thesis can be developed into academic writing with a clear structure, a strong narrative and a meaningful contribution to knowledge.
CREATING SPACE FOR A NEW GENERATION OF WRITERS
Academic publishing should not be seen as an exclusive space only for professors or senior researchers.
We need a new generation of academic writers.
We need new voices.
We need new ideas.
We need young researchers to have the courage to bring their research to the international academic community.
For this reason, UPM Press wants to create more publishing opportunities through edited academic books, where postgraduate students, young lecturers and researchers can work together with professors and subject experts to produce quality scholarly work.
We want to build a mentor-and-mentee ecosystem in publishing.
Professors and senior researchers can share their experience as editors, guides, and mentors. At the same time, young researchers can be given opportunities to write, learn, and understand the full process of developing a manuscript into a professionally published scholarly work.
This is the culture of knowledge that we want to build.
WE DO NOT SELL SCOPUS
As we widen publishing opportunities, I want to emphasise one very important principle.
UPM Press does not sell Scopus.
UPM Press does not promise Scopus.
And we will never sacrifice academic integrity or lower our publishing standards simply to chase indexing.
Indexing in an international database must come from the quality of the publication.
Therefore, every manuscript must have academic merit, reliable facts, strong references, research integrity, a clear contribution to the field, and must go through proper editorial and review processes.
What UPM Press can do is provide the right ecosystem, expertise, guidance, and publishing pathway so that a work can be developed according to high academic and publishing standards.
Our principle is simple:
“We do not lower our standards so that more people can publish. We guide more writers so that they can reach those standards.”
DO NOT WAIT UNTIL YOU BECOME A PROFESSOR
To young lecturers and postgraduate students, I would like to say this:
Do not wait until you become a professor to start building your legacy of knowledge.
An academic legacy begins with the courage to write.
A book chapter published today may become the foundation for a new area of research in the future.
An idea we publish today may be read by a researcher in another country several years from now and may inspire an even greater discovery.
That is the power of publishing.
Academic writing is not only about meeting Key Performance Indicators or earning points for career assessment. Academic writing is a way of passing knowledge from one generation to the next.
That is why I want to see more UPM students and young researchers having the courage to write.
If you have good research, start writing.
If you have valuable findings, share them.
If you have an idea that can benefit society, publish it.
And if you do not know how to begin, come to us at UPM Press. Together, we will look at its potential.
We will help shape the writing.
We will help improve its quality.
And we will work to provide the right publishing platform so that the knowledge can reach a wider audience.
FROM UPM TO THE WORLD
The aspiration of UPM Press is not simply to publish more books.
We want to publish more knowledge that creates impact.
We want to develop more writers.
We want to help more young researchers gain the confidence to write and publish.
We want academic works in Malay, English, and other languages to have their rightful place on the international stage.
And we want to make sure that knowledge produced at the university does not remain only within the university.
It must travel.
It must be read.
It must be cited.
It must be discussed.
And ultimately, it must benefit people.
Therefore, to the entire academic community, especially the new generation of researchers, let us work together to build a strong culture of writing and publishing.
From thesis to book chapter.
From research to publication.
From an idea to a legacy.
And from Universiti Putra Malaysia, we take knowledge to the world.
Insya-Allah, Universiti Putra Malaysia Press will continue to be a home for writers, a bridge for researchers, and a platform for quality knowledge.
Developing Writers. Publishing Knowledge. Taking Excellence to the World.
