a radiologist with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia at the time,
took interventional radiology practise in Malaysia to the next level
in the mid-1990s, establishing it as a prominent component in
clinical practise, particularly in radiology. Pneumoencephalograms,
percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC), and translumbar
aortography were among the preliminary procedures, and later
when the Seldinger technique was developed, cardiac and other
angiograms were performed. With development of new procedures,
improved imaging technologies, and skilled interventional
radiologists, the clinical practise of interventional radiology
in Malaysia has expanded. A vast spectrum of interventional
procedures being performed in many centres across Malaysia by
wide range clinical specialties.
In 2010, the College of Radiology established an Interventional
Radiology special interest group (SIG), with Associate Professor Dr.
Ahmad Sobri Muda as the SIG chairman. Later, the establishment
Malaysian Society of Interventional Radiology (MySIR) was
proposed and registered in October 2012 with Dr Josephine
Subramaniam as its first president. The discipline was indeed
shifting to include other aspects of clinical practises like clinical
conferences, case discussion and debate, and the exchange of
experiences using MySIR as the platform. In many countries, the
neurointerventional practise lead by neuroradiology or neuroscience
specialties, rather than heavily weighted within the interventional
radiology group. Professor Dr Ahmad Sobri Muda was also one
of the lead person in the special interest group of neuroradiology
under the College of Radiology (CoR) at that time.
At that time after the first successful embolization of brain
aneurysms using GDC coils was performed in 1996, a few leading
centers have started to embrace endovascular techniques and have
