Neurointervention
MALAYSIAN NEUROINTERVENTIONAL SOCIETY
(MyNIS)
In December 2019, the Malaysian Neurointerventional Society, was
formed by Associate Professor Dr. Khairul Azmi, Professor Dr.
Ahmad Sobri Muda and Associate Professor Dr. Ezamin, and quickly
embraced by other interventional radiologists and neuroradiologists
practicing active neurointervention. Many strongly believe a new
society or group is necessary to cater more to the ever-increasing
needs of the deeper focus group in neurointervention. With more
clinical components like in other regions, the interest also grows
among other disciplines to be involved in a more active manner
with neurointervention. In many countries, various disciplines are
contributing to the development of neurointerventional practice.
Since the thrombectomy procedure has a very favourable outcome
for acute stroke patients with large and medium-sized vessel
occlusion, it is becoming more and more popular, which reignites
the interest of neurointerventionists to actively involve with the
treatment rather than purely diagnostic.
Regional collaboration between practicing groups of
neurointervention is necessary to jointly develop a more structured
training program with good clinical components for patient
selection, in-patient management, and follow-up apart from the
technical aspect of the neurointerventional procedures. Various
recommendations for training structures, credentialing, and
privileging of neurointervention practitioners were made by various
groups and societies. With advancement in neurointervention in
acute stroke treatment, new recommendations and guidelines were
issued by various groups and societies. The practice has the potential
to evolve into its own clinical specialty with more adoption of new
procedures, clinical management, and new understandings.
